Darkness Visible
William Styron
Audience:  General Public
Issues:  First-person account of severe depression.
Rating:
¶¶¶¶

Comments:  This is a harrowing first-person account of Styron's struggles with severe depression.  As an accomplished writer, Styron is able to describe depression with eloquence and clarity.  I have recommended this book to both students and clients with the caveat that this is one person's experience of depression--severe depression--and that his path through this darkness will not be applicable to every reader.

Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life
Steven C. Hayes

Audience:  General Public
Issues:  Struggling with anxiety, depression, substance abuse, other emotional difficulties

This book is the first major attempt to translate ACT into a self-help format.  The book is full of exercises and metaphors to help clients understand the basics of ACT and, more importantly, begin to relate differently to troublesome thoughts, feelings, and memories.  If you buy this book and hope to make real changes, you MUST work through the book, not simply read through it.  Plan to spend a good month+ working through its many exercises.
